[MCF2016] PLS: The [sub]Versions of Syair - An Evolving Eloquence
Dr. Azhar Ibrahim
Department of Malay Studies
National University of Singapore (NUS)
This talk by Dr. Azhar Ibrahim will delineate the history and typologies of Malay syairs that have evolved over centuries. This narrative rhymed poetic form, which is one of the most commonly found throughout the Malay-Indonesian world, is still written and recited until today. He will also be elaborating on the functions of syair, and how its content can be subversive and still reflects contemporary social criticisms as demonstrated in the collection of Syair Kesaksian (the Syair of Witnessing).
